He was the the 5th child of Joseph SILVA b.abt. 1835, immigrated from the Cape Verde Islands about 1860,d.Apr. 15, 1908, m. Emalia Watson b. Mar.15, 1856, Kaneohe, HI., d.Nov. 28, 1924. The original spelling of his name was SILVA and over the years got changed to SYLVA He was married 3 times, the last marriage was to Mary NAWAI, maiden name HAKE, The following information is from their marriage certificate, they were married on June 14, 1917, at 743 Kanoa Lane in Honolulu. Groom: Joseph E. SILVA [note the spelling of his last name, his death certificate gave his name of Joseph Edward SYLVA Residence: Punahou #1922 Dole St. Age/Nationality: 36, Part Haw'n Birth Place/length of residence: Honolulu, T.H./36 Father: Joe SILVA, Portugese, Portugal Mother: Emily WATSON, Part Hawn, Honolulu Bride: Mary NAWAI Residence: Punahou, 1922 Dole St. Age/Nationality: 23/Part Hawn Divorced 2nd Marriage Birthplace: Maui, T.H. Length of residence: 23 years Father: John HAKE, part hawn, born Maui, T.H. Mother: Laisa SILVA, part hawn, born Maui, T.H. [source cite: Marriage Cert: Territory of HI, Record of Marriage, REG. NO. 14330, June 14, 1917, Registered June 15, 1917 They had 5 children, Rudolph, Ralph, Ruth, Adrian and Phillip His death certificate shows he was still married and the name of his widow was Mrs. Mary H. SYLVA. both of them are buried at Diamond Head Memorial Park. Section E, Plot 155H Headstone reads: JOSEPH E. SYLVA July 26, 1880 July 29, 1948 Section E. I went over the information you gave me, and everything matches up except a couple things. This is what i had: Joseph Silva married Halekunihi Kekahuna and they had Loita Paka, Kae, Mele, Joseph Silva Jr., Kikau and Hannah Aiwohi. Loita Paka Silva is my line. She married 3 husbands: Kahaikapuna (children were: Emily, Kama Haalilio, Kalei, Tai, and Henry Haikapuna), John Haake (children were: Philip and Mary Mailekini) and Joseph S. Kuoha (children were: Sam Kapiioho, Hattie Moonohu, Miriam, John, Emma, Eliza, and Solomon). My line further descends from Hattie's. So, from what you have written and what we have in our family book, it is apparent that Mary Mailekina Haake married 1st William Nawai Sr. and 2nd Joseph Sylva. This would be the Joseph Edward Sylva you were talking about and he would be her mother's youngest brother? One thing I noticed in what you wrote that was different from what we have is the mother of Joseph E. Silva. You wrote that his father, Joe Silva, was married to an Emily Watson. As you can see from above, we have Joe Silva married to Halekunihi Kekahuna. So, either Joe Silva married more than once OR all of the kids we have for Halekunihi Kekahuna and Joe Silva are not placed under the correct parent. Which person are you descended? My father's name was Philip Sylva, b. 1927? in Honolulu, Hawaii. He Has a sister named Ruth, who still lives in Marin County, California.He had mentioned brothers named Ralph, Rudolph and Adrian and I can only assume their last names were Sylva.My father passed away on 10/29/99 in Larkspur,California and with him took all our family history. I lived a short time in Ewa Beach[1963-1967?] with relatives and have a sister named Marilyn living in Maui[?]. I vaguely remember my grandmother, who lived on a sugar cane plantation. I think that I am from this Ohana too. Some of the posts seem kind of confusing but here is where I come from. This information was given to me from my great grand aunty Helen Haleakala (Brown)Sniffen. She was the daughter of Emily Kahaikupuna and John Kahuilaokalani Brown. My greatx3 grandmother was Eliza Sylva married to Kahaikupuna. They had four kids together Emily, Kai, Sam, and Henry. Emily married John Kahuilaokalani Brown. They had a few kids including Frank Keliikamakala Brown who married Annie (Alexander) Brown (my great grandparents). My grandfather was Edward Brown. He owned a service station on Lower Main St. in Paukukalo (Baldy's Chevron/Texaco). My grandfathers other siblings were Annie Kaleilehuaokamau (Brown) Sniffen and Ema (Brown) Mershon. I am trying to get confirmation on the ancestors beyond Eliza Sylva and Kahaikupuna. Posts: 2 (02/22/09 10:55:09) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	I am looking for information on Annie Nawai.. daughter of William Nawai Jr and I believe Mary Nawai, which now in reading some posts, her maiden name was Hake and then later became Silva. Could it be Mary Hake's first husband was William Nawai Jr instead of Sr?. To make things more complicated, my wife's mother (still living and born 1919 on Maui) birth cert reads father William Nawai and Bella Lawrence. Which I can find no evidence of marriage. But I did find that Bella traveled to Calif in 1928 and then maybe married into Moore family...but not sure and am still working on this. If my info, which I have tried to but together with, sometimes only a string of info is correct, Annie Nawai is half sister of my mother in law. I sort of promised her (Josephine) that I would try to search and see if she had any living relatives. My mother in law (Josephine) was put up for adoption after birth and adopted by Antone and Mary Kruger, on Maui. I would love to show Josephine a picture of William Nawai, her father or grandfather, if one exists, while she is still alive. I believe that Annie Nawai married Lui or Lin Kauhane, but I can not find any info on whether they had and children. I am having fun with searching for different bits of info, and it sometime seems like I am trying to put peoples history back into perspective, especially for my mother and her biological father. She remembers seeing him once when she was very young and says that he was very handsome man but was not able to talk to him. Any little piece of info would be helpful. Maybe my wife and my next trip to Hawaii, we can root around some in the info there.... instead of just sitting on the beach and enjoying the view. thanks

Her daughter Annie would be my first cousin three times removed. I have no info on Bella Lawrence. But I have some information on William Nawai and more on Mary Haake. Haake is a German surname that has since taken on a Hawaiian pronunciation. I believe your William Nawai may be the son of William and Kealoha Nawai. Their kids are Children (7) William Nawai B: 1882 Luka Nawai B: 1883 Hattie Nawai B: 1885 Hakalaau Nawai B: 1888 Lucy Nawai Annie Nawai Baby Girl Maybe you could also contact Mahelani Sylva from the earlier posts.
