Joseph Edward SYLVA is my GrandUncle. He was the the 5th child of Joseph SILVA b.abt. 1835, immigrated from the Cape Verde Islands about 1860,d.Apr. 15, 1908, m. Emalia Watson b. Mar.15, 1856, Kaneohe, HI., d.Nov. 28, 1924. The original spelling of his name was SILVA and over the years got changed to SYLVA He was married 3 times, the last marriage was to Mary NAWAI, maiden name HAKE, The following information is from their marriage certificate, they were married on June 14, 1917, at 743 Kanoa Lane in Honolulu. Groom: Joseph E. SILVA [note the spelling of his last name, his death certificate gave his name of Joseph Edward SYLVA Residence: Punahou #1922 Dole St. Age/Nationality: 36, Part Haw'n Birth Place/length of residence: Honolulu, T.H./36 Father: Joe SILVA, Portugese, Portugal Mother: Emily WATSON, Part Hawn, Honolulu Bride: Mary NAWAI Residence: Punahou, 1922 Dole St. Age/Nationality: 23/Part Hawn Divorced 2nd Marriage Birthplace: Maui, T.H. Length of residence: 23 years Father: John HAKE, part hawn, born Maui, T.H. Mother: Laisa SILVA, part hawn, born Maui, T.H. [source cite: Marriage Cert: Territory of HI, Record of Marriage, REG. NO. 14330, June 14, 1917, Registered June 15, 1917 They had 5 children, Rudolph, Ralph, Ruth, Adrian and Phillip His death certificate shows he was still married and the name of his widow was Mrs. Mary H. SYLVA. both of them are buried at Diamond Head Memorial Park. Section E, Plot 155H Headstone reads: JOSEPH E. SYLVA July 26, 1880 July 29, 1948 Section E. Plot 155K Headstone reads: Our Beloved Mother MARY H. SYLVA MAY 4, 1896 - APR 13,1978 Also buried between them is his brother and my GrandUncle Section E, Plot 155I Headstone reads: GEORGE K.
