Hi!  -  Joseph (second generation paternal side - Hawaiian/Portugese) and Mary Silva/Sylva Hawaiian are my paternal grandparents.  Although they were married in 1917, they actually lived together previous to their marriage and they had seven children:  Walter Naopuu Silva/Sylva bn 10/26/1913; Stanley born 1915; twins - Rudolph and Ralph born 1917; Ruth about 1922; Adrian about 1927; and, Phillip born in 1930.
My Dad, Walt, worked at Pearl Harbor N.S. and left the islands in 1943.  He worked at Hunter's Point N.S, from '43 to '55 when he transferred to Mare Island N.S. and became Master Shipfitter of Shop 11; he died in 1993.  Uncle Stanley was a merchant mariner, had a difficult life.  He married a few times and I keep in contact with one of his daughters, Diane Burke.  He died around the 1980's.  Uncle Rudolph lived in Hawaii, worked for Hawaiian Electric and inherited all his family's property (he didn't share with his sister or younger brother although they could have used his help; he died in late 1990's? and left over a million dollars to the Maryknoll Schools in Punahou.  Father Ralph was a Maryknoll Missionary and worked in Bolivia until he became very ill.  He was transferred to CA and then HI when he became pastor of the "Painted Church of Honaunau".  You can see his bio on their website.  Auntie Ruth lives in Petaluma with her daughter Diane Felli.  They are aloof and I don't know if Auntie Ruth is still alive.  I send Diane Christmas cards but she's never responds. Uncle Adrian was killed in the Korean War, won the silver star and is buried at Punchbowl.  Uncle Phillip was born in 1930.  He was a wrestler in Hawaii and known as "The Bandit".  He moved to the Mainland, was in trouble most of his life, married several times, has kids around the country and landed in jail in Texas (I think).  However, we saw him the most as my parents would invite him, Auntie Ruth and Diane to dinner. He was a wonderful story-teller and all the kids loved him!
We visited Grandma Mary at her home at 1922 Dole Street.  She had dogs, rabbits in cages, a chicken house, a papaya and an avocado tree in her yard.  After she died, Uncle Rudy sold the property.  The house was demolished; no letters nor family memorabilia were returned to us.  The land is now occupied by two private residences.
We visit the islands every January for our anniversary.  My husband is a retired A/L pilot.  We have two sons and three grandchildren.  My Mother is Sarah Margaret Morton Sylva from the Morton/Cahill/Thompson family from Hilo, Hawaii and we have attended three of their family reunions.  Mahalo for all your Kokua in deciphering Grandma's Ohana.  I couldn't find information to whom she was first married nor when she divorced.  ~  Aloha, Sylvia
