Information regarding the Imaikalani family from the Big Island and also from Kauai. My grandfather was Joseph Imaikalani. When he married Emilia Haleakala Kuanaio Lota they raised their 3 sons and 1 daughter in Hanalei and Nawiliwili, Kauai. My grandfather was a post man. He delivered mail from Hanalei to Nawiliwili by horse. The name was changed after the birth of their first son David to the single capital letter "I". My father's youngest brother, Gabriel I, passed away in May of 2002.

I apologize. If you are still out there, I haven't visited the site for some time, in fact I had to renew my ezboard membership.
This is what I have information on without many dates. My great-great-grandmother was Mele Holokahiki. She was married to Imaikalani, no date, no first name or reason as to what happened to him. My great-great-great grandfather met Joseph Lovell (1806-1886), from Hingham MA on the docks in Lahina, Maui; liked him and introduced him to his daughter Mele. Their children were Loika, John, Daniel, William and Kini. My great grandmother was Loika, who married Daniel Imaikalani. I don't know what happened to him either, although there is speculation that he was killed on Kauai where the family lived. Loika and Daniel had Joseph Imaikalani, my grandfather, Daniel Imaikalani, Julia Nani I Lovell, Mary I Lovell and Ruth Hoomalu I Lovell. The 3 with the Lovell last name may have been children from other than Daniel. My grandfather Joseph married Maria Emilia Haleakal Kuanaio Lota from Hanalei, Kauai. They had David, Emily, Henry and Gabriel. The story of the change in the name was recited in the first e-mail. My father, Henry left Nawiliwili in 1921 on a merchant ship and didn't return to Hawai`i until 1961; he settled in Tacoma, Wa in the 1940's and married my mother, Jetta Gae Heidt from Idaho. There were 4 of us in the family myself, Nani, Joe and Momi. Your grandmother may have information on the Imaikalani's and very well could have been from Moloka`i. Mahalo for responding and for the information. Leilani |

Leilani,
My name is Teri Apana, my grandmother was Emma Imaikalani aka Emma Lovell from Nawiliwili, Kauai. I have a lot of information that you need on the family tree of the Lovell. I am writing this at work but I can be reached at home where I have a lot of the information that you require along with the Lovell Bible which was sent to me by a Kent Lovell in Massachusetts. I live on Kauai now as the island was calling me to move back here from the mainland and have been working with LaFrance Lapaka-Arboleda from OHA regarding the family tree. I trace the family back to Joseph Lovell who married Mary Holokahiki. You can e-mail me at netlani@aol.com. Hope to hear from you soon. Teri Apana |

i was reading your posting and see we are related. my grandmother was Helen I (Rapozo) from Kauai.
what i am trying to find out in particular is why the 2 names, Lovell and I were used interchangably? the genealogy i have goes back to the Lovell line of Joseph Lovell and Mele Holokahiki. I am actually trying to trace back the genealogy of my grandmother, Helen I's, mother Eliza Kauha'aha'a, who was married to Daniel I. |

I read your post about your grandfather being Jospeh Imaikalani who had a son David and then changed his last name to I. My husband's grandfather's father was David I or Imaikalani. Joseph I was born 24 Oct 1865 in Lihue, Kauai. Do you think he is a descendant of your grandfather Joseph Imaikalani? Do you have any dates of birth, death, etc. that you can share? My husband is named after Joseph (Iokepa). Any help you can offer is greatly appreciated. |
