I am looking for info on my grandfather. I have my fathers birth ceritificate stating my grandfather was born in Pahala Hi, race says Hawaiian. He was born March 15,1902. With the help of a Barbara Nakamura in Hawaii we have the following info only.
According to the 1910 Hawaii Census: (Kau District E.D.108,page 50)
Mao Ah Sing, age 7 (born 1902), Hawaiian/Chinese
Father: born in China
Mother: born in Hawaii
he was listed as living in the household with:
Uncle: Kanakaole MAO
Aunt: Hattie Kaaua MAO
thier son: George MAO
Uncles mother in law: Mele K'aaua
1900 Hawaii Census
Kau District E.D.54, page 194
Mao Ah Sing's father Ah Sing
30 years old, born 1870 both parents born in China was immigrant laborere
Based on the above info, this is the consensus thus far:
Mao Ah Sings father (see above)
his mother is sister of Kanakaole Mao
as is the practice with Asian familes, the children usually take thier mothers maiden name as part of theirs.
Thus Mao is his mothers maiden name
the name of Kahalekii Kanakanui and Jim Y. Sing, Barbara doesn't believe are his parents, unless we have document of proof. They could be his "hanai" (foster) parents or the ones that raised him. She is not sure if Ah Sing was ever married to Mao.
If anyone can help in anyway I would really appreciate it.
thx Petra Edmonson
